Asphalt: Pickup and Bulk Delivery in NJ
Braen Stone’s asphalt is used in many different applications, from large Department of Transportation (DOT) projects on the Garden State Parkway to small jobs around your neighborhood. Hot mix asphalt (HMA) is produced by heating the asphalt binder to decrease its viscosity, and drying the aggregates to remove moisture from it prior to mixing. Mixing is generally performed with the aggregate at about 300 degrees for virgin asphalt and 330 degrees for polymer modified asphalt. HMA is most commonly used on roadways, driveways, parking lots, walking trails and bike paths.
Paving and compaction must be performed while the asphalt is sufficiently hot. Paving is often restricted to the summer because during winter, the compacted base will cool the asphalt too much before it is packed to the optimal air content.
Superpave mix is a pavement system designed to provide longer lasting roadways. This system is comprised of the careful selection of both binders as well as aggregates, volumetric proportioning of ingredients and the evaluation of the finished product.
Warm mix asphalt (WMA) is produced by adding waxes, asphalt emulsions or sometimes even water to the asphalt binder prior to mixing. Warm asphalt mixes will also allow longer haul distances and a longer construction season if the mixes are produced at more normal operating temperatures.
Types of Asphalt
Braen Stone is the industry leader of asphalt in the northern New Jersey area. All of our asphalt is available for bulk delivery and pickup at our asphalt plant in NJ.
Driveway mix is a specially engineered and carefully balanced mixture of various aggregates, including crushed stone, gravel and sand. When combined with asphalt cement, the aggregate ingredients create hot mix asphalt, which has long been one of the most economical and reliable ways to finish a driveway or parking lot surface.
The term “Stabilized Base” describes sub-base pavement layers that work to provide a strong foundation for pavements. These sub-base layers can be used for both rigid and flexible pavements. In most cases, however, stab base is utilized in flexible pavement types.
MABC is a mid-sized hot mix asphalt that is widely used in the construction and repair of roads, highways, airport runways and other surfaces that are subject to high vehicular traffic. MABC tends to have a thick, sticky texture when it is heated, and dries as a dense and tough solid.
FABC or I-5 is used as the top layer of roadways, driveways, parking lots and runways. It is made of binders and fillers, mixed with aggregates in gradually reducing sizes, laid in layers and compacted to create a stable and durable road surface. It is designed to be able to stand up to the rigors of heavy traffic without cracking or slipping in either hot or cold temperatures.
