Crushed Stone vs. Pea Gravel: Prices, Sizes & Uses

pea gravel vs crushed stone

Crushed stone and pea gravel are two “hardscape” materials that can be used in many applications in the construction and agricultural fields.

Crushed stone comes in a wider variety of sizes and generally costs a little more than pea gravel. Pea gravel has a more attractive appearance and the stones are typically smaller than crushed stone. Crushed stone prices in NJ don’t vary a whole lot between pea gravel.

Dimensions and Appearance

The main difference between pea gravel and crushed stone are their sizes. Pea gravel is generally 1/8″ to 3/8″ in size or about the size of pea, hence the name “pea” gravel. Crushed stone is available in sizes from 1/2″ to about 4″.

There is a category of crushed stone known as stone dust or screenings and it is just as it says, dust. Pea gravel comes in a variety of of softer hues such as light blue, beige and light red. The stone comes in shades of white, black and gray, unless it has been colored.

Crushed Stone and Pea Gravel Prices

Of course, crushed stone prices depend on the quantity purchased. As both of these products are used for applications that are not easily definable such as walkways or driveways it is imperative to make good measurements or as good as measurements as you can.

The cost of a cubic yard of pea gravel runs from about $45 per ton of regular gravel. More attractive grades of pea gravel can cost two to three times that much.

Crushed stone runs from about $20 per ton for screenings or dust up to around $35 per ton for 3-5″ stone. Crushed stone that is similar in size to pea gravel runs about $30 per ton.

Keep in mind that prices could vary widely depending on your location. There are generally minimum amounts of gravel or stone that will be delivered to a project site. This can vary the price also. It is best to always shop and compare when dealing with crushed stone prices or contact a licensed stone supplier.

Final Thoughts

Crushed stone comes in a wider variety of sizes than pea gravel and is generally larger in size than the gravel. Pea gravel is more attractive and used where more decoration is needed. Crushed stone is a little bit more expensive but the price difference is not that great.

There are pro and cons to each type of material. Before deciding on what type of material to use for your project plan well and study each of the materials in depth, and contact a local stone supply company for more information.
